Date: May 5, 2000

From: Gail Johnson
Subject: ITPG Systems Integration
Sub-Committee 5/1/2000 Meeting Minutes
Present problems:
- Disparate on-line systems
for student services exist, many requiring their own logon or authentication
techniques.
- Data element definitions
- We want to identify and document common data elements, their definitions,
and their attributes.
- Batch file transfers is
the commonly used technique to handle data integration. What architectures
and techniques can be adopted to ease and improve application system
integration?
- Time, staff, and resources
will be required to provide a foundation for effective systems integration.
Are those resources available?
- Is there an "image" problem
for the UCSB home page? While we recognize that the UCSB home page is
out of our scope, we recommend:
- That a contemporary,
relevant, and esthetically pleasing home page be designed and adopted
and that the home page is given a face lift from time to time.
- That broken links be
fixed.
- That "newsworthy" research
and events be featured and updated regularly on the UCSB home page.
Preliminary goals for the
group:
- Establish an inventory
of web systems available to our students.
- Propose architectures (shared
and required components) for campus portals for students, faculty, and
staff.
- Strive for uniformity and
a standard approach.
- Advocate for necessary
uniformity.
- Identify and define common
data elements and their definitions and attributes.
- Produce reports, recommendations,
and action plans. For example, create report (or repository?) for common
data elements and common authentication architectures/services including
the present perm/pin authentication.
- Attend portal conferences.
Do we have the proper players
in the room?
Graduate Division should be
represented.
Sabrina Enyeart, from the
Admissions Office, should be invited.
The College of Letters and
Science should be represented.
To be agile and productive
we want to limit the number of participants to ten or less, however, and
that committee representation vary depending on the active issues. We
also recommend that the committee live in perpetuity.
Mission statement - First
draft
To propose a common framework
for access to UCSB online resources and that facilitate system and data
integration. The framework will include:
- Common data elements
and their semantics.
- Etiquette around data.
- Trusted authentication
(authentication and authorization)
- Address data sharing
and handoff
- Mechanics of system
interaction
- Address data custody
issues
Administrative details:
We will meet every other Monday,
starting May 8, 2000, from 3:00 to 4:30. The meeting on May 8, 2000 will
be held in North Hall 1131.
